Unstoppable at 80: A Cycling Journey Across Queensland’s Rail Trails

Introduction
In early March, Out There Cycling had the absolute joy of hosting a group of incredible women from New Zealand—seasoned travellers, long-time friends, and cycling enthusiasts with a zest for life that’s nothing short of inspiring. Their journey? A 13-day custom cycling tour through Queensland’s most scenic and soulful trails.
The Adventure Begins
Arriving at Brisbane International Airport with big smiles and boundless energy, this adventurous crew had been planning their trip for months. They believed it might be their final big cycling adventure together—so they wanted to make it count. And that’s where we came in.
They reached out to Out There Cycling to help tailor an itinerary that combined the best of the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail, the South Burnett Wine Region, the Link Trail, and the iconic Brisbane Valley Rail Trail—plus a few off-trail detours through Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Bribie Island.
The Journey
Over 13 days and 12 nights, these unstoppable women pedalled (and sometimes shuttled) their way across Queensland’s backroads and bush trails. We were on hand with full support on key days, helping with logistics, trail conditions, and the occasional adjustment—especially after Queensland’s wild weather put some sections of trail to the test.
They handled it all with humour, grace and a dash of Kiwi grit. Not even a cyclone could dampen their spirits.
Did We Mention They’re in Their 80s?
Yes, you read that right. Many in the group were in their 80s, and their camaraderie, resilience and adventurous spirit left a mark on everyone they met. For over a decade, they’ve cycled and tramped together across the globe, and it was a privilege to be part of their story this time around.
Their tales were as rich as the landscapes we travelled through and watching them work together—always looking out for one another—was nothing short of heartwarming.
The Goodbye
When we dropped them off at the airport, there were hugs all round. They couldn’t have been more grateful for the support, and we couldn’t be more grateful to have shared this journey with them.
Final Thoughts
We meet many wonderful people through our tours, but some groups leave a lasting impression. This was one of them. Their passion for adventure, joy in the moment, and sheer determination reminds us why we do what we do.
